The Owls got the 2014 season off to a perfect 2-0 start, with wins of 11-5 and 5-2 against former division rival University of Houston, who moved up to D1 this season. The Owls were clearly motivated by the presence of an emaciated stray dog near the dugout, and a horn-honking snack vendor, who helped provide all the energy the Owls would need.

Jake Gildan and Oscar Turner earned the wins on the mound. Many Owls had good games at the plate, including Stephen Wallin, Jacob Hernandez and Brody Weinrich (who claimed to be playing his best to impress the dog).

In the between-game fungo golf tournament, Oscar Turner was already in mid-season form. Perhaps inspired by the fans he brought to the games, he came within inches of a hole-in-one. In game two, Chris Walker made good use of his voice in calmly instructing Travis Guzzardo what to do with the ball after making a catch in right field.

Overall, the season is off to a good start, and the Owls will be back in action in a scrimmage against St. John’s HS on Wednesday, February 12th.
