The Owls moved to 5-1 in district play with a three game sweep of Tulane on Saturday. All three games were played on Saturday because of bad weather in the forecast for Sunday.

Rice came out with some offense in the first game, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits in a 10-6 victory. Daniel Kaplan started for the Owls on the mound, and Ryan Monahan had three hits.

The day had many dramatic moments, with walk-off wins for the Owls in games two and three. In game two, the Owls tied the game in the 6th, and walked off in the 7th on a single by Brody Weinrich that scored Eric Manpearl on a very close play at the plate. Mike Vatcher threw a complete game, keeping the Owls in the game until the offense came around for a 2-1 victory.

Game three was the tensest of all, ending in a 3-2 Rice victory in 10 innings. For the third straight game, the Owls fell behind early, only to come back. A two-run single by Jake Gildan tied the game at two, and it would go into extra innings. Zach Satira started and pitched a strong 7+ innings. In the top of the 8th, with bases loaded and no outs, Chris Walker came in and held Tulane off the scoreboard with help from a crazy double play that resulted in a Tulane player getting ejected. The game would go on until the 10th inning, when the Green Wave starter finally tired and came out of the game. With runners on first and second, the new pitcher threw two wild pitches that allowed Mike Vatcher to come home with the winning run and a tripleheader sweep.

Next weekend, the Owls travel to New Orleans for another series against Tulane.

John Stretton won this weekend’s fungo golf match over a playing field of nearly half the team/coaches.
