In their first conference series of the season, the Owls defeated UH twice in three games. Backed by six innings of no-hit ball from Daniel Kaplan and some timely hitting, Rice took the first game by a score of 7-1. In game two, the Owls wasted a solid performance on the mound by Zach Satira, as they were shut out 3-0. However, Rice responded in game three, as Mike Vatcher tossed a complete-game one-hit shutout and the offense came alive in a 7-0 victory. Notably, Ryan Monahan had six hits in the series to lead the team, and Jake Gildan pitched a scoreless 7th inning in both games of the Saturday doubleheader.

On Saturday, the Owls played a non-league doubleheader against LSC-Montgomery in Spring, Tx. Rice fell 11-4 and 5-3 in the two games, but accomplished some goals in this Spring Training of sorts. Many of our pitchers got valuable work in on the mound, and pitching looks to be one of the team’s strong points once again this season. We also put a lot of good swings on the ball, giving optimism for an improved offense here in 2013. Most importantly, these games were valuable in helping the team prepare for the upcoming conference schedule, beginning with next weekend’s series against rival University of Houston.

Notably, alumnus and coach John Stretton took 1st place in the between-game fungo golf tournament over Zach Satira and Daniel Kaplan.
