This weekend the Rice club baseball team swept a double-header with Division I rival Lone Star Kingwood, winning 11-9 and 13-4.  Chris Walker dominated in his first pitching appearance this spring.  The Owls also welcomed back Satoshi Mizutani and Eric Manpearl, who each had hits in the series.  Highlight at the plat was a HR by Brandon Davies in his only atbat of the weekend, and first plate appearance in nearly a year.

This past week Owls were featured in a story in the Rice Thresher, which you can find here.

The Owls were also discussed on the 2/11/2011 edition of Suite 301, the CollClub Sports webcast, here.  Watch the full thing or turn to minute 29 to hear the District VII preview.  The hosts on the show predict Rice to win District VII and come to the World Series for a second year in a row.  Conference play will be tough again in 2011, as Montgomery has shown signs of improvement, San Antonio College showed something in picking up a win over UT and Corps of Cadets will be dangerous again.

Owls Drop Non-Conference Series to Texas A&M

  • 2/12/11: Texas A&M 6 @ Rice 8
  • 2/13/11: Texas A&M 12 @ Rice 3
  • 2/13/11: Texas A&M 13 @ Rice 3

Over the weekend, the Owls (#4, NCBA Division II) and the Aggies (#5, NCBA Division I) squared off at Taub Field in Houston.  In game 1, another solid outing by freshman Mike Vatcher kept Rice in the game until the Owl bats came to life.  Senior Fred Carbone held off the Aggie comeback with a three-inning relief outing to pick up the win.  In game 2, freshman Danny Kaplan stymied the Texas A&M offense for his scheduled three innings, leaving with the score tied 1-1.  From there it got out of hand.  With two pitchers out with minor injuries, a third recovering from an illness, and a fourth MIA, the Owls were turned to inexperienced arms.  The Aggies came to life and pummelled the Owls, scoring 11 runs in the final three innings.  The lone bright spot for Rice offensively was a monster home run by junior Chris Brown.

On Sunday, it was more of the same.  The Owls were shut down by A&M pitching and played pretty shoddy defense.  Final score: 13-3.

The Owls look to get healthy and build some momentum this coming weekend with two games at Lone Star College Kingwood.
